Hillier House was originally set up as an Almshouse, initially in London and then in Guildford, over 200 years ago to provide sheltered housing for elderly "poor women of good character".
In 1970 the old premises were rebuilt to provide studio flats.
Over the years the facilities have been continuously kept up to date and indeed the Trustees have recently changed several of the studio flats into one bedroom flats to offer residents wider choice. We have found however that there still remains a good demand for the original studio flats (See "Facilities")
There are at present 22 lady residents who have been at Hillier House from only a few months to over 20 years and who are aged from under 60 to over 90 years old.
We continue to attract older ladies who wish to live independently and safely in the Guildford area, yet within a caring community.
We aim to provide the best of facilities at affordable cost and to run the Almshouses efficiently and cost effectively for the sole benefit of the residents.
We are members of both the Almshouse Association and the Tenant Services Authority (the old Housing Corporation) who offer help and advice and regulate our standards and our performance. In addition to a full time warden who acts as a "good neighbour" to the residents we also have a Manager and an active body of local, experienced, Trustees.
